What is a clinical study?

A clinical study is a scientific investigation conducted on humans to determine whether a treatment, product, or ingredient is safe and works as intended.

The key characteristics are:

  • Human participants – the study is conducted on people, not animals or cells.
  • Controlled design – participants are often compared with a control group (which often receives a placebo – a treatment or product that contains no active ingredient) to determine whether the effect truly comes from the treatment.
  • Randomization – participants are randomly assigned to different groups to reduce sources of bias.
  • Double-blinding – neither participants nor researchers know who receives the active treatment or the placebo, ensuring objective interpretation of the results.
  • Statistical analysis – the results are carefully analyzed to determine whether the effects are real and not due to chance.

In short: a clinical study is the best way to determine whether a product is safe and effective for humans, and whether it can actually provide the effect it claims.

All of Probi’s products on the Swedish market have extensive scientific documentation. Some of the strains have, for example, been examined and documented in more than 80 publications involving thousands of people. These studies have helped document the products’ safety and their potential to support physiological functions such as, for example, a normal gut flora.
